Beckington was first mentioned in the Doomsday Book and was a very wealthy village due mainly to its wool production. Bypassed from the main A36 some years ago, the village now retains a rural air of peace and tranquillity giving it a feeling of a bygone era, not matched by many villages in the region. Strolling around the village, you will discover very old properties ranging from weavers’ cottage to a castle and everything in between. “Mes Amis” is a favoured coffee shop which also sells gifts and there are two highly regarded local pubs to choose from, serving the best in food, wine and beer. Frome, 3 miles away, is an attractive market town and there is an M&S foodstore as well as numerous independent stores and a Sainsbury supermarket. There is a wonderful farm shop less than a mile from Well Cottage which is locally renowned and a very large car boot sale at Frome Farmers Market each and every Sunday with everything from fresh meats and vegetables to bric a brac and plants. |
